What Can We Do: In Society: Some Simple Steps

  1. Find an organization in your community that is making a difference in building a culture of peace, and support it with volunteer time or financial donations. This could be an organization that seeks to build understanding across religious, racial, or class lines, or that is trying to prevent crime by working with young people in positive ways, or teaches meditation or yoga, or that is making a difference in any way in increasing understanding and reducing violence.
Read the article on ‘Reducing Polarization in Political Dialogue’ in this section, and use the tools to model respectful listening and speaking about divergent political views.
  2. Contact your legislators to urge them to support programs that help build a more peaceful culture – e.g., programs that reduce crime by providing training and jobs for young people in inner cities, teaching of highly effective courses in conflict resolution at all age levels, etc.
